Pasquale X. Montesano, MD is a spine surgeon specializing in motion-preserving and minimally invasive approaches to spine care, with particular expertise in disc replacement and endoscopic spine surgery. His guiding philosophy, “Life is motion,” reflects his commitment to helping patients relieve pain, restore function, and return to the activities that matter most to them.
Dr. Montesano’s approach to spine care is deeply personal. After experiencing the effects of paralysis in his own family, he understands the profound impact spinal conditions can have on patients and their loved ones. He is driven by the opportunity to relieve pain and help patients regain mobility, independence, and quality of life. He believes that treatment should never be one-size-fits-all, but rather carefully tailored to each patient’s individual condition, goals, and lifestyle.
A leader in minimally invasive and innovative spine care, Dr. Montesano is passionate about disc replacement, endoscopic spine surgery, and emerging regenerative approaches to spine care, including biologic therapies. His work focuses on advancing treatment options that can preserve motion and minimize the impact of surgery when appropriate.
Dr. Montesano also brings a unique perspective as a practitioner and lifelong student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A black belt under Royce Gracie, he understands the physical demands of competitive athletics firsthand. One of the most rewarding aspects of his work is helping patients return to high-level activities, including competitive Jiu-Jitsu and other sports.
Having personally undergone spine surgery—and experienced a major complication requiring an urgent return to the operating room—Dr. Montesano brings an additional level of empathy and perspective to his care. He understands not only the medical complexities of spine surgery, but also the uncertainty and vulnerability patients can experience throughout the process.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Montesano enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, traveling, and practicing Jiu-Jitsu. He is also active in health and medical education through his own podcast, where he shares his expertise and perspectives on spine care.
