Biography

Dr. Omar Rahman is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder injuries, reconstruction, and replacement, with a sports medicine perspective that shapes the way he approaches both surgical and nonsurgical care. His expertise includes rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, arthritis, and complex shoulder reconstruction and replacement. His goal is not simply to treat an injury, but to help each patient return to the activities and lifestyle that matter most to them.

Having trained as a team physician in professional baseball, Dr. Rahman learned to think about the shoulder through the lens of performance and function—not simply what appears on an MRI. That perspective carries through to every patient he treats, from professional athletes to weekend golfers, fitness enthusiasts, and grandparents who want to stay active and pain-free.

Dr. Rahman believes that surgery is appropriate only when it is the right solution for the right patient. His approach encompasses the full spectrum of orthopedic care, including conservative treatment, physical therapy, orthobiologics, and surgery. He has a particular interest in regenerative medicine and the evolving role of orthobiologics in supporting tissue healing, addressing inflammation, and potentially delaying or avoiding surgery in appropriately selected patients.

At the center of his philosophy is the belief that treatment should begin with understanding the biology and the individual—not simply the diagnosis. As patients encounter increasing information about PRP, stem cells, peptides, exosomes, and other regenerative therapies, Dr. Rahman emphasizes evidence-based care, appropriate patient selection, and individualized treatment rather than one-size-fits-all protocols.

For Dr. Rahman, one of the most rewarding parts of medicine is seeing the full arc of a patient's recovery. Whether treatment involves rehabilitation, orthobiologics, or surgery, he measures success by what patients are ultimately able to do again. The most meaningful moments are often when a patient returns to an activity they once believed they had lost.

Dr. Rahman also specializes in complex and revision shoulder surgery. In one recent case, he converted a failed anatomic shoulder replacement to a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty—a technically demanding procedure involving altered anatomy, compromised bone stock, scar tissue, and a previous implant. Following surgery and rehabilitation, the patient recovered well and regained meaningful shoulder function after years of limitation.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Rahman is actively involved in orthopedic research and innovation. He serves as Principal Investigator for a Phase 3, multicenter clinical trial evaluating CARTISTEM® for knee osteoarthritis and cartilage lesions, as well as a study examining arthroscopic patellofemoral cartilage assessment in correlation with vibroaudioarthrography and MRI. He also consults with medical device companies on artificial intelligence and mixed-reality applications in surgical technology.

Dr. Rahman lectures nationally on peptide therapy and cellular biology in orthopedics and serves as a peer reviewer for academic orthopedic journals. He has been featured in Scientific American and has participated in podcasts discussing orthobiologics and regenerative medicine.

His work reflects a broader vision for the future of musculoskeletal medicine—one that brings together surgical precision, sports medicine, orthobiologics, emerging technology, and a deeper understanding of musculoskeletal health and longevity. For Dr. Rahman, scientific curiosity and clinical expertise belong together, with both ultimately serving the same purpose: helping patients move better, stay active, and get back to what they love.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Rahman enjoys traveling, discovering new restaurants, playing pickup basketball, listening to classic rock and EDM, and spending time with his miniature golden retriever, Brooks. He is also a passionate Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers fan.
