Biography

Dr. L. Randall (Randy) Mohler, MD, is a triple board-certified orthopedic surgeon dedicated to helping patients throughout Southern California return to the active lives they love. With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Mohler specializes in orthopedic sports medicine, hand and microvascular surgery, joint replacement, and tendon repair.

Dr. Mohler treats a broad range of orthopedic conditions, from torn rotator cuffs and ACL injuries to arthritis requiring knee or hip replacement, as well as complex hand and tendon problems. While highly trained in advanced surgical techniques, he believes in thoroughly exploring nonoperative treatment options whenever appropriate. When surgery is necessary, his approach emphasizes precision, minimally invasive techniques when possible, and enhanced recovery protocols designed to reduce pain and help patients return to activity sooner.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Mohler graduated summa cum laude from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, before earning his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship at Penn State University Hershey Medical Center, followed by his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego. He then completed fellowship training in hand and microvascular surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Following fellowship, Dr. Mohler served as a staff surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group in San Diego before joining California Orthopaedic Institute in 2005.

Dr. Mohler is an active member of several leading professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association for Surgery of the Hand, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the California Orthopaedic Association. He has served as an elected member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Counselors and remains committed to advancing the field of orthopedic surgery.

He currently serves as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego's oldest hospital, founded in 1890.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mohler enjoys spending time with friends and family and pursuing his love of the outdoors, particularly hiking and skiing.
